The Basics
What is pressure washing equipment?
Pressure washing — or waterblasting, as it's often called here in New Zealand — uses a high-pressure water jet to clean hard surfaces: concrete, driveways, paths, plant and machinery. The water does the work, blasting off dirt, moss, grime and paint that a hose or a broom never would.
A pressure washer is built around a pump. An engine or electric motor drives that pump, which takes your water supply and forces it out at high pressure through a hose, gun and nozzle. Get the combination right — engine power, pump flow and pressure, the correct nozzle — and you clean faster with less effort. Get it wrong and you either can't shift the dirt, or you damage the surface and burn out gear that was never rated for the work.
The other half of the story is flow versus pressure. Sky-high PSI on a cheap machine sounds impressive, but for professional cleaning it's flow — litres per minute — that clears a surface quickly. With flow comes efficiency, which is why Softwash Source recommends a minimum of 21 L/min for a true commercial, daily-use machine — and why the pros run bigger pumps and engines than a hardware-store unit. What's the difference between a pressure washer and a waterblaster?
They're the same thing — "waterblaster" is just the common New Zealand term for a pressure washer. Both use an engine or motor-driven pump to deliver a high-pressure jet for cleaning hard surfaces like concrete, driveways, paths and machinery. Commercial units run higher flow and pressure than a hardware-store machine, which is what lets you work faster all day.
How much pressure and flow do I need?
For professional work, flow (litres per minute) usually matters more than raw PSI — more flow clears a surface faster, so with flow comes efficiency. For a true commercial, daily-use machine we recommend a minimum of 21 L/min, typically paired with around 2,500–4,000 PSI. The right mix depends on the job — tell us what you clean and we'll match the pump, engine and nozzles to it.
What's the difference from a soft wash system?
A pressure washer blasts hard surfaces with high-pressure water. A soft wash system applies a higher-strength cleaning solution at low pressure to safely clean delicate surfaces like roofs, cladding and render. Many operators run both — and we supply the equipment for each.
